Nothing ages us faster than the lack of regular, effective exercise.

Muscles melt away, bones go brittle, posture stoops, skin sags, flab hangs-and joints creak. Pain, fear and fatigue become our constant companions.

The good news is that there is one form of exercise which can give you immeasurable health benefits, whatever your age. Regular, well-designed kettlebell workouts may not only reverse many symptoms of aging, but will actively contribute to building your strength and power well into your 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.

Andrea Du Cane's Ageless Body presents a complete De-Aging Masterplan, that gives everyone from the raw novice to the experienced athlete an opportunity to defy physical decline and hone themselves-safely, simply and progressively-into the muscular, energetic, magnetic specimens they deserve to be.

"Ageless Body" is a well designed mix of kettlebells, joint mobility, stretching, and balance training that will probably suit the needs of 80% of the older American population that want to "get back in shape" and regain some of their youthful strength and endurance. I've worked with weights, bands, yoga, kettlebells, barbells, and chi kung for decades and it seems to me that DuCane does a pretty good job here. Barring severe joint dysfunction or medical conditions, if all you did was follow her recommended six week "ramp up" and then her sample six week training schedule and patientlyed progress through the increasingly challenging exercise variations over time, adding some weight as you went (along with some walking and a decent diet), you'd probably thrive and make yourself (and your) doctors very happy.

Why only 4 stars? Well, it's overpriced for one thing (and the accompanying DVD even more so) at 30 bucks for under 150 pages, especially for a slim trade paperback with wide margins, big fonts, and several pages of ads in the back. For another, the exercise selections are pretty boring (at least for me). Another potential weakness: true to "Hardstyle/RKC" orthodoxy, the program relies too much on the "swing", an exercise that some people with hip and back problems just can't do. It took me years to be able to swing a kettlebell without pain in my left sacro-iliac joint and all the stuff I did to eventually fix the problem falls way outside the realm of this book. For comparison, Steve Maxwell's cardio routines place far less emphasis on the swing, making it one of nearly a dozen other variations. There is very little upper body pulling in the program, although the "carries" will develop some of the same attributes if you do them right. (Why no rows?) Ducane also spends some pages demonstrating exercises that she doesn't include in the training program, which seems odd and sketchy to me.

Finally, the book's exclusive focus on kettlebells as a strength tool marginalizes it - in real life, people will do much better with a mix of resistance bands, dumbbells, kettlebells, and bodyweight calisthentics such as pushups, bridges, leg lifts, chinup and upper body pulling variations, etc. So the program isn't as good as it could have been. I realize this is a marketing thing - Ducane specializes in Kettlebells, and her publisher makes most of its money marketing and selling kettlebells and their associated training materials...but it is an issue that bothers me.

But if you are over 50 (or even 40) and just want a "plug-in and go" fitness and health solution, and you are content to do simple, easy to learn exercises for the next few decades, you should consider *Ageless Body".
